What happens if one of you changes your mind after a mutual yes

You both wanted the same night, and neither of you said so. Saying it first felt risky, and hearing no one more time felt worse. So the evening passed in silence. YesTonight exists for that moment, and this post covers the awkward edge of it: what happens if one of you says yes, then thinks better of it.

YesTonight is a private nightly question for two people who are already together. Each of you answers on your own phone. Only a mutual yes creates a match. There is one exception, and we name it every time: if you both said yes, your partner has already opened the match, and you then change your mind, your partner may find out that tonight is off. The section called "Two cases, and the line between them" explains exactly how, and how it can fail to reach them.

Why a yes can be changed

A yes at six in the evening can feel different at ten. You might be tired, the day might have gone badly, or something might have been said at dinner. If a yes could never be taken back, people would answer more carefully than they need to, or not answer at all. So you can change your answer after a match appears.

Two cases, and the line between them

Your partner has not opened the match. If you change your answer, the match is removed and nothing is sent to your partner about the change. If a match notification had already reached their phone, it cannot be taken back.

Your partner has already opened the match. They have seen it, so removing it quietly would leave a gap they might notice. In this case, if your partner has the app open when you change your answer, a banner tells them tonight is off and names you. Otherwise they may only get a short notification, if they have one set up and have not switched that setting off, and the match will simply be gone when they next look. We do not promise that the banner or the notification reaches them. Neither says why you changed your mind, because we do not ask and we do not guess.

That is the whole exception. It applies only when the match had already been opened. We would rather tell you now than have you find out later.

What the app cannot protect you from

The app controls what appears on a screen. It cannot control a room. If you go quiet, avoid your partner's eye, or act differently after a match disappears, the person you live with may notice. Silence in a room can still be read. YesTonight does not change that, and we do not claim it does.

We also cannot promise how or when you will hear about a match, because notifications depend on your device and your settings. YesTonight runs in a browser, and you can install it to your home screen.

Who this is for

It is for couples who still want each other and have gotten good at saying nothing. The question comes every night. Each of you answers on your own phone, and a match appears only when both of you say yes. If one of you then changes an answer, the rules above apply.

Reply with the question you would want answered before letting this near your relationship. We will answer it plainly, including the parts that do not flatter us.
